Vertigo

What is vertigo?

Vertigo is the unpleasant sensation of spinning; this distressing feeling develops suddenly and can last from a few minutes to several days.

Medically, vertigo does not mean the fear of heights; the sensation of dizziness that you feel when you are looking down from heights is a condition known as acrophobia.

What should you do?

Consult your physician. It might be necessary to investigate the condition to rule out any serious underlying cause. A bout of vertigo is usually relieved if you lie down and keep the head still for a few minutes.

Investigating vertigo

Vertigo is often a result of a problem in the inner ear, which contains the organs that control balance. The doctor after examining the eyes, ears, throat and taking blood pressure might prescribe medication to relieve and treat symptoms.

Vertigo can also be a result of conditions such as stroke, high blood pressure, cervical spondylosis or aging. The sooner you get to know the cause the better the chance of relief.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins occur when the superficial veins in the skin of the legs dilate (enlarge), and appear on the surface as lumpy, purple-coloured cords. Women are more susceptible to varicose veins than men; also obesity increases the pressure on the superficial veins, which can result in the formation of varicose veins.

Simple self-help measures for varicose veins

  • Avoid standing for long periods of time.
  • Exercise or walk during the day to keep blood flowing in your legs.
  • Elevate your feet when possible.
  • Lose weight if you are overweight.

Varicose veins can sometimes be painful, and the physician might even need to suggest surgery. So get your condition detected soon, to avoid further complications.

Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism

You might cut out meat from your diet for many reasons - better health, compassion for animals or because you’ve always been a vegetarian. Choosing to be a vegetarian is an individual choice, but it is a well-established fact that if you make wholesome food choices you will be brimming with energy, vitality and good health.

Fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products, seeds, sprouts and nuts will give your body ample nourishment. The American Dietetic Association (ADA) states that, compared to meat eaters, vegetarians have lower incidence rates for high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, breast and colon cancer and other several digestive and degenerative diseases.

Benefits of a well-balanced vegetarian diet

  • Low caloric content
  • Low intake of fat
  • A boost to the immune system
  • High fiber content

Why are so many people giving up meat and turning vegetarian?
The primary reason is to improve health. Meats (especially red meat) are high in saturated fats and cholesterol, which are often treated with chemicals that humans are better off without.

There are different kinds of vegetarians. The most common is the ovo-lacto vegetarian, who eats dairy and eggs but no meat, fish, poultry or seafood. Lacto-vegetarians on the other hand, consume dairy products but no eggs, meat, fish, poultry or seafood; whereas vegans exclude all animal products from their diet.

Vision

“The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg; and the highest vision of a soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are seedlings of realities.”
- James Allen

Visualization

  • Visualization is a powerful training and motivational tool. It bypasses the conscious, logical defenses and penetrates deep into the psyche. And, if you can actually see yourself succeed at a goal, the mind accepts this as a real possibility.

  • Words, thoughts and images, carry emotions. Motivation is an emotion, and experiencing motivating emotions each day is critical to success.

  • Imagining success is actually a method of reprogramming the mind and body. A Ph.D. thesis, showed that when alcoholics visualize resisting the temptation to consume an alcoholic drink, they improve their chances of resistance in real-life settings as well.
